Yesterday, July the 1st, marked the introduction of the CO2 Tax in Australia. While Government Ministers cross the Country saying that all is well, and that the sky has not fallen in, explaining that this huge new Tax is really nothing at all, electricity providers, who make up the top 4 and 14 of the top 20 emitters of CO2 have already ramped up the cost of the electricity that they provide, a direct indicator of the impact on them, price rises that will be passed directly down to all consumers of electricity. The following chart shows just some of those increases…..TonyfromOz.
Reader Scott isn’t impressed by Wayne Swan’s shopping bill yesterday, which the Treasurer used to “prove” the carbon tax wasn’t a problem:
Thought you might be interested in the effect of the carbon tax on the wholesale electricity price so far in light of Wayne Swans comments re his weetbix not going up… The prices above are for the electricity spot market – which is the wholesale National Electricity market. These prices eventually get reflected through to customers in the Retail market as the contracts that Retailers pay Wholesalers will go up by the same amount, however at the home the wholesale electricity prices are only about 35-40 % of the price of electricity after transmission and distribution network costs are added.
Instant step change in electricity prices of ~$21-25/MWh across the big 3 east coast states. This is probably ~$2 more than was expected. However it is only early days.
